Ecuador is a representative democratic republic in northwest South America, bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west, Peru to the east and south and Colombia to the north, and includes the famous Galápagos Islands, about 1,000 kilometers west of the mainland.

The People

Ecuador evolved from many indigenous tribes that formed the great Inca Empire during the 15th century. Ecuador achieved independence from Spain in 1820 as part of Gran Colombia and in 1830, gained their sovereign state. This history is reflective throughout the ethnically diverse population of 15.2 million people. As many as 13 Amerindian languages are recognized but Spanish is the official language and is spoken by the majority of the population.

The Land

Known for its rich ecology, Ecuador is one of 17 megadiverse countries in the world as it is host to many endemic plants and animals on the mainland and in the prized Galápagos Islands. For this reason, Ecuador’s new constitution, ratified of 2008, is the first country in the world to recognize legally enforceable Rights of Nature, or ecosystem rights.
